Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), under the Ministry of Power, will implement first project for rural LED street lighting in the country under the Government of India’s Street Lighting National Project (SLNP). The project comprises retrofitting 10 lakh conventional street lights with LED lights in Gram Panchayats of 7 districts in Andhra Pradesh. This replacement drive in rural areas will help the gram panchayats to cumulatively save approximately 147 million units of electricity annually, and lead to reduction of 12 crore tonne of CO2.
Saurabh Kumar, Managing Director, EESL has said, “EESL takes pride in announcing the first rural LED street lighting project in the country, and there could be no better place to begin this than Andhra Pradesh. The state has always welcomed our initiatives with open arms and has truly spearheaded the energy efficiency movement in the country. We would also like to extend our gratitude to AFD for the financial support in implementation of this project, without which it could not have achieved this scale.”
A joint venture of NTPC Ltd, Power Finance Corporation Ltd, Rural Electrification Corporation and POWERGRID, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) was set up under Ministry of Power to facilitate implementation of energy efficiency projects. EESL is a Super Energy Service Company (ESCO) that seeks to unlock energy efficiency market in India, estimated to at US$ 12 billion, that can potentially result in energy savings of up to 20 per cent of current consumption, by way of innovative business and implementation models. It also acts as the resource centre for capacity building of State DISCOMs, ERCs, SDAs, upcoming ESCOs, financial institutions, etc.
