Madurai corporation proposes to set up a plant that can convert municipal solid waste into torrefied (dried and environment friendly) charcoal at Vellaikal dumpyard. Torrefied charcoal is similar to natural coal and can be blended with fuel in thermal power plants to produce electricity.

Indian Railways has included 90 railway stations in the southern railway for modernisation under Amrit Bharat Scheme. About 15 railway stations in each of the six divisions - Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchchirappalli, Salem, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram will be modernised with a long-term vision, said official sources from the railways.

As many as 300 roads in Madurai city which have been damaged are to be taken up for repair work soon at a cost of Rs. 20 crore. Madurai Corporation has been successful in getting a special fund allocation of Rs. 60 crore for road works. In the first phase, the repair work on 300 roads would be taken up.

The chemical and textile company will invest Rs. 500 crore in Tamil Nadu and a memorandum of understanding was signed with the government to this effect. GHCL said it would set up 40,000 ring spindles in Manapparai, Tiruchirappalli district to produce synthetic and synthetic blended yarn to cater to knitting and weaving segments.

A food court costing Rs 2 crore will be constructed by the department near the Mariamman Teppakulam in Madurai, which has become a popular evening leisure spot. Construction work and other activities pertaining to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai will begin soon, with financial support from a Japanese agency. The process is said to be in a very advanced stage.

Rs. 775 crore has been earmarked for the ongoing doubling-cum-electrification work of railway lines between Madurai and Thiruvananthapuram in the Union budget 2021-22. The doubling works in several districts on the route are expected to be completed in another two years. To date, the project has received Rs. 2,365.5 crore out of the total estimated Rs. 3,618.70 crore.
