APSEZ has set a target of doubling cargo handling to 400 million (mt) by 2025. As part of the expansion plan, capacity addition will be carried out at the existing ports as well as target new ports.

JSW Infrastructure plans to undertake expansion of its port cargo handling capacity. The capacity at Jaigarh port in the state of Maharashtra will be increased from 40 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 80 MTPA over the next three years.

The Government regularly monitors projects that aim to modernize and upgrade the port infrastructure in the country. The projects include modernization and construction of new berths and terminals, installation of state of the art equipment, mechanization of cargo handling systems etc.

Paradip Port Trust (PPT) has planned Outer harbour project under the Government of India's Sagarmala initiative. Howe Engineering Products (India) Ltd is appointed as consultant for carrying out the feasibility study.

The Government of India aims to develop multi-purpose berths thereby enhancing the cargo handling capacity at various major ports in the country. These projects will enable major Ports to handle a variety of cargoes reduce the pre-berthing detention time and turn round time of vessels.

The foundation stone for a cruise passenger terminal building is laid at the Mormugao port. It is likely that with the construction of the passenger building, the port profile will undergo a sea change from being considered as a cargo handling port to port for the tourists or the passengers. The Centre is providing funding for this project to the extent of Rs 8.79 crore.

Plans expansion of JSW Jaigarh Port In association with Kolhapur Chamber of Commerce and Industries. The port is currently fully operational with 2 berths having cargo handling capacity of 15 MTPA. In Phase II, the capacity will be expanded to 50 million tonne with a total of 9 berths catering to RoRo, liquid, containers, break-bulk and bulk cargoes.

The company is likely to commission its dry bulk cargo handling terminal at Tuna Tekra by December 2014. Adani Ports won the right to develop a dry bulk terminal with a cargo handling capacity of 14.112 mmtpa at Tuna Tekra, Kandla Port in February 2012 under a concession agreement with Kandla Port trust.

DPCL is a joint venture of Tata and L&T. DPCL is implementing the Dhamra port development project. The port has sought 745 acre of land to facilitate its second phase expansion. The Government of Odisha has given in-principle nod to allot land. The expansion project includes increasing its berth strength from 2 to 13 and upgrade cargo handling capacity four-fold from 25 to 100 MTPA in 5 years.
