State-owned engineering firm Bharat Heavy Electricals and Nuclear Power Corporation have inked an initial pact to jointly pursue business opportunities in nuclear power based on pressurised heavy water reactor technology.

Indias atomic power major, Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) began the excavation work for construction of two 700 MW power plants at Karnatakas Kaiga. According to the NPCIL, the two units - fifth and sixth- at Kaiga are part of the ten indigenous 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) sanctioned by the government.

Rosatom from Russia constructed the nuclear power plant, which is now being operated by NPCIL. The work on constructing Units III and IV would begin soon.
