The Indian government wants to ramp up the country’s coal production and consumption. The union environment ministry has accordingly made it easier for thermal power plants to change the source of coal from imported to domestic – a procedure that so far involved seeking an amendment in the environment clearance of such plants.

Thermal power producer NTPC has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Power, setting key targets for the year 2020-21. Key targets include 340 BU of electricity generation, 15 MMT of coal production, Rs. 21,000 crore capital expenditure and Rs. 98,000 crores of revenue from operations.

Coal India’s arm Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL) has set an ambitious target of 100 million tonnes (MT) production by 2026-27 and plans to set up 20 more mines by 2024. WCL will see Rs. 5,300 crore capital investment.

Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) has got the green nod for Kistaram open cast mine recently, with a capacity of 2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), in Sathupalli mandal of Khammam district.

Essar Power MP Limited, a subsidiary of Essar Power, one of India’s leading private sector power producer, today said that it has signed the Coal Mine Development and Production Agreement with the Government of India for the Tokisud North coal block in Jharkhand and has also completed all other formalities.

The company expects commercial coal production from the Adriyala longwall underground mining project in a month. As of now test run is being conducted and coal has started coming up through the conveyor belt from the underground mine. The mine will initially produce around 1.5 million tonne of coal per annum (mtpa).
