The Tamil Nadu government has plans to repair its highway roads in the current fiscal year in an effort to cut down on travel time and vehicle running expenses. The department to adopt better contracting strategies such EPC, PPP, and output and performance-based road contracts (OPRC).

The state government has exceeded its target by constructing rural roads of 2,189.72 km against the annual target of 2,000 km set by end of February. With the current pace of construction, the Rural Development department is expecting that the total length of new roads may cross the 2,500 km mark by the end of the current fiscal.

The Union government has given in-principle sanction (stage-one forest clearance) for the diversion of forest land for the construction of twin tunnel with four-lane approach roads via Anakkampoyil, Kalladi and Meppadi connecting Kozhikode and Wayanad.

The arterial Ghodbunder road in Thane connecting western and eastern Mumbai suburbs with Nashik is likely to be widened soon by integrating the under-utilised 9-m service roads along either sides of the highway. The estimated cost of widening could be in the range of Rs 40-50 crore.

The Government of India is making roads valued at Rs 3 lakh crore in the North East to help eradicate poverty and reduce the suffering of the people. Nitin Gadkari, Union minister for roads, transport and highways, said road projects worth over Rs 25,000 crore are being implemented in Meghalaya.

The National Highways Infra Trust is looking to raise around Rs 7,500 crore to Rs 8,000 crore by monetising the next tranche of six road assets. The NHIT will take possession of roads including the Gwalior-Shivpuri (Madhya Pradesh) of length 125.38 km, Chichira-Kharagpur (West Bengal) of length 56.12 km, and Orai-Bara (Uttar Pradesh) of length 125.806 km by March.

A total of 134 km of highway roads passing through the city — Anna Salai, Jawaharlal Nehru Salai and Poonamallee High Road — will be developed into smart urban roads. The Highways Department has begun preparing a detailed project report for the project.
