Airports Authority of India (AAI) and other airport developers have targeted capital outlay of approximately Rs 91,000 crore in airport sector in the next five years for expansion and modification of existing terminals, new terminals and strengthening of runways, among other activities, according to the civil aviation ministry.

Puducherry airport remains underutilised till date despite having modern facilities. To give fillip to the tourism sector and attract industrial investment in the Union Territory, the Puducherry government, Civil Aviation Ministry and Airports Authority of India have signed a Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding to operationalise the Puducherry airport in January 2017.

The Government of Tamil Nadu as per Vision 2023 document intends to construct a new airport at Sriperumbudur near Chennai. The feasibility report on the proposed greenfield airport is ready. Formal proposal to the Aviation ministry is expected from the State Govt.

Kushinagar airport project is moving at a rapid pace. Land acquisition is complete. All clearances including the in-principle approval of the steering committee of Civil Aviation Ministry is in place.
