POTHOLES: WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?
Unedited views of the respondents are provided as under:
H.M. Gupta, AGM, Monnet Ispat & Energy Ltd.
Corruption starts from top and propagates to the roots of every parts of life. It affects all. This is the basic reason of every problem.
Taran, None, None
Corruption, combined with ineptitude is the cause of the pitiable condition of our roads. There is also one school of thought that indiscriminate construction of sky scrapers has trapped under soil water which finds the line of least resistance to the surface, damaging badly constructed roads even more. All articles on the subject are either offensive or defensive. Wish someone would analyse it intelligently and state what is required.
Will the number and size of the potholes on our roads always remain a true measure of our democracy?
Rajiv Sable, Group Manager, Apollo Tyres Ltd.
Day by day road conditions getting detoriated. Our comparator, politicians and nexus between government officials & contractors are resulting in these conditions. Everybody is busy in churning out money through such contracts and hard earn money of general public which is being collected in terms of tax to provide better infrastructure & facilities being misused. Government officials, contractors & municipal commissioner should known that that are servant to the people and not to the local politicians. But the fact is that they please local politicians and able to roam around freely. It should be stopped immediately and culprits should be put behind the bars for making substandard infrastructure.
Jasheel Raut, BDM, M/s Snehal AC & R Pvt. Ltd.
Dear All, Well its very clear that and everyone knows that the road contractor has to shell out 40% share of his contract to all the Corrupt people working. So who's is to blame all of them.
Mahesh Udhalikar, Manager - Water Treatment, Anantco Enterprises P LTD
Dear Sir, For India; rocket science is easier than building a road. The reason for such bad condition of roads is; nobody is accountable for this issue. The onus is conviniently shared and dumped by all the options listed by you above. Just listing some major issues associated with this menace: Safety: Accidents, deaths, health hazards, environmental pollution Time: Transit time, missed opportunities. Money: Cost of excess fuel, indirect losses, vehicle maintainance. Energy: Fuel, personel. Stress: Frustration, disputes at work place, disputes at home Image of our nation.
G.Kathirvel, AGM, M/S Christy Group Of Companies
Dear Sir, I have an openion that for the sake of recovering the fund what they had spent during the election in many fold the Politicians controls the officials to award the contract to their associates so that they may control the contract fund in their favour ,so their associates in-turn forced to use the sub- standard materials and some times vialate the technology in use also. In my openion the origin of poor quality starts with the corrupt politicians as per my above observations to this alarming magnitude.
Stephen P Chako, Asst. Professor, AISAT
Roads to be constructed in improoved specification just like highway. Minimum garanty period of 5years should be the part of contract. All in the organisational set up of engineering wing should be punished if there is any damage caused during garanty period.
with regards
V Prasad, Dy. Project Manager, M/s NCCL,
Due to lack of control in our public system the control on the Quality is not maintained evev due involvement of corrupt politicians and corrupt officials the technological terms are also deviated.
Sachin K. Ambekar, Dy. Manager, SPCL
Due to pathetic conditions of the roads, life of the motorists and the pedestrians are at stake
Indrajeet Mandal Manager Eastern tradelinks & projects Due to the existing level of corruption at the billing & sanction level, contractors are bound to adjust their 'under-table' backhand money by means of supplying sub-standard materials at the jobs, which are seldom checked by the authorities as they are feed by the contractors & they leaST HAVE ANY VOICE TO OBJECT, thereby creating a wastage of public funds & creating potholes. Besides, inspite of existence of modern technology in road furnishing, government authorities are not experimenting them in daily basis & so carting forward with all those nonsense features in utility causing all those difficulties for common man & public to suffer.
Rahul wankhede, Post Graduate Management Trainee, Shapoorji Pallonji Co. Ltd
even one chain brokes the whole system falls.. In short , everyone is responsible... if politician are corrupt then whole system gets corrupt but even if politicians are not corrupt then what is the guarantee of the the beaeaucrats and Private party of not involving in any corrupt practices?... and so i gave everyone equal weightage.
Prashant, Project Manager, Precision Auto Ind. Pvt. Ltd. Unit II
EVERY LINK IN THE ROAD CONSTRUCTION IS HAVING DECIDED SOME PERCENTAGE. IF THE TENDER IS OF RS.100/-. THE ROAD CONTRACTOR HAS TO DISTRIBUTE MORE THAN RS.50/- AND IN THE REMAINING AMOUNT HE CONTRUCT THE ROAD WITH SUBSTANDARD MATERIAL.
deepak bisht, Project engineer, DLF homes ltd

Arvind KR, RTD Nil,
every wear its becom black, though every body now knows every things & behaind corroption frod earning & no true embishies for batterment in our contry india ,sista, sajanta, samman, prathista every thing are forgaten or sold by all those corrupt person ,the roolar is rooling the road in revers way ie not edge to croun but rooling croun to edge causing revers cant &water accumulation on road becouse of issu contract to criminals &unexpriance person in our contry india so now things has gone so high & that;s why every body is responcible for wrong working .
Jasvir Kumar, Engineer, Punj Lloyd
everyone is responsible. firstly muncipal corporation pay less to road contractors and expext quality from them, due to low contract value contractors use substandard material and all this is done with the help of upper management (politicians). so all are corrupt.
Prasan Thakkar, Director, Vinsons Infraventure Pvt. Ltd.
Everywhere in India the roads are good and well maintained except in Maharashtra...The only saving grace is the Mumbai Pune Expressway and to a certain extent the Mumbai Nashik Four Lane Highway...But compared to the toll charges the upkeep should be much better...
P K Mishra, Govt. Service, Govt. Service
Excellent idea.
Ganesh M S, Junior Site Engineer, Iiser
FIRST OF ALL PERIODIC MAINTENANCE SHOULD BE CONDUCTED FOR ALL OF OUR ROADS & DONOT WAIT TILL THE ROAD CONDITION GOT WORSE.THEN PROPER DRAINAGE SHOULD BE GIVEN SO THAT WE CAN AVOID FLLODING OF WATER IN ROADS DURING HEAVY RAIN.
Shabna P.K, Billing Engineer, Heera constructions
Kochi First we should blame the corrupt politicians, who give the authority to inefficient engineers & road contractors. We are still using sub standard methods for road construction, just to give profit to the government. There are many methods, which are both efficient and economical.
Rajeev Ranjan, DGM, NTPC Ltd
For Growth & Developement Roads are very important, we must have good roads which will not only lead to growth of our country but also there will be lot of savings in fuel.
K K Bachhil, SO/D RRCAT for local roads,
only municipal corporation is responsible as rest of the 05 elements are choosen by MC. they allow --corrupt politician to be there, contractors to be corrupt and share cost with agencies, use of poor technology, use of substandard material, hence pime responsibility lies with the body who is in-charge of the task. providing local spotless roads is responsibility of civil body and they have so far failed in most indian cities in achieving this.
S Mallick, Dy. Gen. Manager / Civil, BHEL
Formation of potholes on the bituminous roads are mainly due to the stagnation of rain water due to improper drainage arrangements. Many times roads are laid without giving a thought to drain out the rain water. This leads to formation of pothole and once formed it keeps on enlarging its size due to impact from the heavy ongoing traffic.
Delay in repair also causes havoc. Timely repair can arrest the deterioration of roads to a great extent.
Francis Morris, Manager, DSC Ltd
general material were use substandard, need to judge quality of material .
Suresh Chandra, Executive Engineer, Pwd
good approach to highlight the issue. in addition to above reasons one more reason i.e. technical knowledge of the field staff & their divotion to their work
Pradeep Ghumare, Director, Koenig Equipment India Pvt. Ltd.
Good initiative!!!
Manish Mishra, Sr. Manager, AIPL
GOVERNMENT SHOULD TAKE INITIATIVE AND RULES WHICH APPLY FOR BOT PROJECT SHOULD APPLY HERE ALSO
Rakesh Anand,
Hand over the maintenance to infra firms with a proven track record which should be supervised by an independent survey company which will audit costs and materials required to be used.
Phyllis Rodrigues, Sr. Executive - Events
Indo-German Chamber of Commerce Have read of so many accidents where people had to be admitted to hospitals and spent huge amount on medical bills, some have even lost lives with vehicles going over them. There is absolutely no value for a living beings but a huge haha huhu was made about the potholes when Lord Ganesha’s Idol was to be taken home and later for immersion – that’s the irony of it all. The idol has no life which in any case will be immersed but a living person??? – no value for life. Special action for the Lord. After all he is the Lord!!!
Er.G.G.Kulkarni, Ex.Project Engineer, Retired from RECONDO Ltd. WIL.

MAINELY ISI STANGERS ACCORDING FORIGN COUNTRIES NOT AS PER INDIAN STATE WISE SPECIFICATIONS DEPENDING UP ON CLIMATE. CONCRETE ROADS ARE NOT PROPERLY PAVED.. AND WITH POOR QUALITY..ONLY MIXING CEMENT..AGRIGATES..SAND AND LAYING IS NOT THE PROCESS ADOPT PT]ROPER DESIGN..I SAW CORPORATION CONTRACTOR CASTIN WITH NO RESPONCIBILITY BUT A LABOUR IS WORKING ..NO SUPERVISOR.NO ENGINEER FROM BOTH THE SIDE TO CHECK RATIO..MIX QUALITY..OR VIBRATORS ARE USED AND RESULTS IN CRACKS SETTELMENTS UNEVENNESS AND MAINY THINGS,
Even in Ashphalt Pavements. ..all the above are responcible.
