IR considers plan to replace Mumbai suburban services with air-conditioned light trains

Indian Railways plans to replace traditional suburban services in Mumbai and other cities with air-conditioned light trains such as those used by the country’s metro systems in Delhi and elsewhere. The railways is considering plans to convert 80 Mumbai local trains into partially air-conditioned immediately at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corp. (Maha Metro) and Indian Railways have signed a MOU to run a pilot project in Nagpur. Maha Metro is providing train sets that can run on Indian Railways broad gauge network.
