Central Public Sector Enterprise Coal India plans investment in coal bed methane (CBM) projects. The coal major had decided to invite global bids to procure the required technology. The investment would be to the tune of Rs 3,000 crore. CIL subsidiary Bharat Coking Coalfields will take up the first project at Jharia coalfields in Jharkhand which holds reserves of 25 billion cubic metre. The production is targeted in two years. Eastern Coalfields, subsidiary of CIL will undertake the second project at Ranigunj coal blocks in West Bengal. The block holds around 3 billion cubic metre of CBM trapped in coal seams.
