BharatNet project

"Government has planned the BharatNet project to provide 100 Mbps broadband connectivity to approx. 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats across the country. Phase-I project is under implementation and envisage connecting 1 lakh Gram Panchayats (GPs) by laying underground Optical Fibre Cable(OFC). 1.5 lakh GPs in the country would be connected under Phase-II, targeted to be completed by March 2019. The connectivity will be provided using an optimal mix of underground fibre, fibre over power lines, radio and satellite media. As on 23.07.2017, the status of implementation of BharatNet is as under:- No. of GPs where OFC laying is completed : 100,299 GPs, Optical Fibre Cable laid : 221,925 Kms and Broadband Connectivity provided in GPs : 25,426 GPs. Telecom minister Manoj Sinha has said that major Telcos like Airtel, Jio and Vodafone have shown interest in the project. BharatNet has progressed well from 322 km of OFC laid in June 2014 to 2.37 lakh km now."
